DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF ORAL AND ENT DISORDERS

August 1-12, 2001

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: Oral and ENT disorders are some of the most common reasons that patients seek medical or dental care. There is a great deal of overlap between

dental, general medical, and ENT specialty practices.  Patients frequently complain of oral and dental problems to their ENT or general physician and ENT problems to their primary care physician or dentist.  Unfortunately, most medical and dental school curriculums as well as residency programs devote very little time to educating their students and residents

regarding these overlapping areas.  This course seeks to reduce this knowledge deficit and enhance interdisciplinary patient care by providing a review of diagnostic criteria and current therapy of diseases of the oral cavity and head and neck with a particular emphasis on those areas with overlap among the various disciplines encountering these disorders.  Therefore, the topics have been selected to serve the needs of a broad range of practitioners with exposure to these disease processes.  The course material will provide

the primary care physician or general medical physician with an update in both dental and ENT areas affecting their practice.  General and specialized dental practitioners will gain more knowledge of unusual oral cavity disorders and a broader understanding of ENT disorders that relate to the oral cavity. Otolaryngologists will benefit from being able to recognize oral cavity diseases encountered in their practice as well by obtaining

an update in their own field.  The faculty members have practiced in an interdisciplinary fashion for the past 14 years, which allows them to provide such education to a seemingly diverse group.

The course is structured to allow a high degree of interactive discussion with the faculty and practitioners from other disciplines.  The sessions will be scheduled to allow for maximum enjoyment of the cruise and ports of call.
