Latest Dental Drugs, Herbal Remedies & Related Products: What Works
& What Doesn't
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Dental Drugs: This all new nuts and bolts course for 2000 will
bring you up-to-date with the new dental drugs (such as PerioStat, Atridox,
Enamelon, drugs for oral sedation, etc.) and important new medical drugs
(such as the new Viagra drugs, new arthritic drugs, Celbrex, Enbrel,
weight control drugs, Meridia, etc.). Current drugs will be reviewed
in the context of the antihypertensives, antidepressants, estrogen therapies,
tranquilizers, analgesics and anesthetics. Frequently asked questions
will be presented for antibiotics including the pre-procedural use in
cardiac, joint prothesis and weight-control-drug patients. Also, drug
combinations to stay away from, what to use for alternate drugs, Internet
drug information sources and how to construct your own drug database
for the office.
Herbals: Herbal remedies are presently mainstream with a glut
of new claims and new products on drugstore shelves. The science and
popularity of the herbal blockbusters will be described along with frequently-asked
questions regarding consumer use and effectiveness. Effective and not-so-effective
dental herbals will be surveyed. A sampling of remedies described are
Kava-kava, Echinacea, St. John's Wort, Ginkgo biloba, Ginseng, Valerian,
Garlic, Aloe, Arnica Montana, Feverfew, Par d'Arco, Grape Seed, Green
Tea, Saw Palmetto, Cosamin DS, Dong Quai, Tom's of Maine dentifrice,
and others. Descriptions of better products, companies and dose forms
will be provided along with Internet sites for more information. Medical
claims and scientific basis for the effects will be described. This
course will give you the knowledge you need to provide informed advice
in patient counseling and intelligent decisions about self medication.
FACULTY: Richard L Wynn, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology, University
of Maryland Dental School, Lead Author of Drug Information Handbook
for Dentistry, Drug Columnist for the Academy of General Dentistry and
Consultant to Drug Industry. Dr. Wynn is a reviewer for the J Am Dental
Assoc, and consultant to the United States Pharmacopoeia for new drugs
including herbals. He receives funded research from DOD/Army for studies
of complimentary medical therapies.

Craniofacial Pain and Pathofunction Series: Part I-Temporomandibular
Disorder: Current Concepts }
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Temporomandibular disorders represent a group of musculoskeletal conditions
that share common signs and symptoms. Identification of the specific
diagnostic entity involved in each case is essential prior to the development
of a case specific plan of management. Diagnosis of TMD may be extremely
challenging due to the complexity of sensory innervation of the head
and neck, the frequency of referred pain the region, and the uniqueness
of each individual's pain experience. Part I of this comprehensive series
will present general principles of examination, differential diagnosis,
and management of patients with TMD. Special emphasis will be placed
on the multifaceted aspects of a well-structured history taking process.
A sequential format for clinical examination of the temporomandibular
joints, head and neck musculature, and occlusal function will be described
in detail. Clinical characteristics and management considerations for
the various subgroups of intracapsular and extracapsular disorders will
be presented.

Joe Carnley brings years of training learned at the Dale Carnegie Institute
to many fields, including dentistry. Dr. Carnely is an exciting communcator
with the ability to combine leadership skills and human relationship
principles that motivate and enthrall audiences. He is a consultant
for numerous corporations and organizations, including CompuServe, Million
Dollar Round Table, the city of Destin, Abbott Realty, the Air Force,
and many dental groups. In addition to being a motivational speaker,
Dr. Carnley teaches for the Dale Carnegie Institute, is an associate
faculty member at the L.D. Pankey Institute, and is a frequent instructor
for the University of Florida College of Dentistry's Continuing Dental
Education programs. He is participating in a leadership program for
all athletes at Florida State University. He has spent two years in
the Air Force, and has been a full-time, practicing dentist for over

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

ability for shade selection? Surprisingly, both colour blind and normal

A.E. (Buddy) Clark, DMD, PhD, a professor in Prosthodontics, is the
course director for the pre-clinical portion of the DMD curriculum which
deals with porcelain, colour and aesthetics. Allyson A. Barrett, a researcher
in the Dept. of Dental Biomaterials, is engaged in colour research,
testing dentists and students, as well as teaching colour recognition
coupled with colour science. The colour research has lead to novel findings
she has presented over years at the IADR. Her background as a professional
artist fuels her enthusiasm for colour!
